Watch the goblin invasion squad lose 9 of its 10 members before the last one goes on a statistically unlikely rampage and eviscerates your entire army. Learn how to watch your finest crafted masterwork plan evaporate to a butterfly that got stuck in a floodgate or a sock you forgot to forbid. Learn how to watch your investment crumble. Don't throw away the fort 'just because' but recognize that these short reboots are solely to learn, and it's important to feel like you're meeting the goal of learning the things you set out to learn. You will learn incidental things like "stockpile logistics" along the way without setting out to learn them. Speed up the process of failure by making your forts purpose-built for one learning or one lesson, then burn them and learn something new with a new fort. Again, once the lesson was learned, I burned it to the waterline and moved on. The third was how to flood stone and farm on mud below ground. My second one was "how to farm above ground", and it burned right after I learned. I played until I understood it, burned the world and started anew. My first fortress was all about learning to make buildings, dig, mine, excavate, make objects in workshops. I'm not egotist enough to recommend my own (now slightly out of date) videos, but whether it's mine, or CaptainDuck's or those of someone else, it is worthwhile to see how a game of DF is controlled in general by someone who knows how before attempting to emulate their play on your own. You'll want it around when you try to learn new things, if only just to know things like "how I make bearded alcoholic short guy dig?"
